Thiên Niên Kiện (Homalomena) is a prized medicinal plant among the ethnic minority communities of the Trường Sơn mountains. People use it to boost health, relieve bone and joint aches, prevent rheumatism and aid digestion, all common health problems in mountain areas. Locals cook with the leaves and treat aches by crushing the rhizome and applying it directly to the sore spot. In traditional Eastern medicine texts, Thiên niên kiện is classed among remedies that relieve rheumatism and strengthen the sinews and bones.

Description

✅ Characteristics: a pale yellow liquid with a warm, rich scent that lingers for a very long time. Chemical composition: about 38 compounds, mainly linalool (69.71 – 71.20%), plus terpinen-4-ol (4%), linalyl acetate (3.3%), δ-carene (1.3%), α-terpineol (1.2%), carvomenthyl acetate (1.2%), β-thujene (1%) and β-caryophyllene (1%).

✅ Uses: Health care:

+ Thiên niên kiện (Homalomena occulta) is an herb used to boost physical strength, reduce inflammation, and treat cold-wind conditions, rheumatism, aching tendons and bones, and cramps or numbness. In folk medicine, Thiên niên kiện is often used for rheumatism and stomach pain, to stimulate digestion, and to relieve menstrual cramps. Thiên niên kiện essential oil has strong antifungal properties, especially against fungi such as curvularia pallescen, aspergillus niger, fusarium graminearum…).

✅ How to use

+ Diffusion: add 3-5 drops to an oil burner or essential oil diffuser in your room to help you relax, ease stress, sleep well, and get rid of musty smells caused by rainy, humid weather.

+ Dilute with a carrier oil (coconut, olive, jojoba) at 10-30% and massage it directly into areas that often ache, such as the neck and shoulders, fingers, wrists, back, knees, ankles and feet. If you have no carrier oil, you can apply Thiên niên kiện essential oil directly, using no more than 3 drops.

+ Mix with Ginger and Lemongrass essential oils at a 1:1:1 ratio, then dilute the blend in a carrier oil at 10% for a massage oil that helps strengthen bones and joints, eases aches, and protects and cleanses the skin.
