Huế Thanh Trà Pomelo – A Royal Tribute Specialty from the Thủy Biều Orchards
29/08/2025
The Origin and Distinctive Flavour of Huế Thanh Trà Pomelo
Many believe that thanh trà originated from a pomelo variety from northern Vietnam. When grown in Huế, thanks to the blend of local soil, the waters of the Perfume River and the region's distinctive climate of droughts, storms and long rains, the fruit developed an unmistakably light, refreshing sweetness.
Thanh trà is at its best from early August to mid-September, when the fruit is fully ripe and juicy. Among the many growing areas, the most renowned is Thủy Biều thanh trà (Huế City) – regarded as the "birthplace" of the thanh trà orchards once offered to the kings, famous for their rich, sweet flavour.
Thanh Trà – A Royal Tribute Fruit Under the Nguyễn Dynasty
According to historical records, under the Nguyễn Dynasty the royal court selected the finest local specialties every year to present as tribute to the king. Thủy Biều thanh trà was one of them, carefully chosen and offered to the imperial palace.
Notably, Huế still re-enacts the Thanh Trà Tribute Ceremony as part of the Thanh Trà Festival. The ceremony is held solemnly at Ngọ Môn Gate – the Huế Imperial City, where royal guards receive the offerings on behalf of the court and then present them at temples such as Thế Miếu and Triệu Miếu. This is how the people of Huế preserve and honour the cultural and historical values tied to this specialty fruit.
Travel and Culinary Experiences with Huế Thanh Trà
More than just a specialty fruit, Huế thanh trà has become a highlight of tourism and culinary activities in the ancient capital. Every September, the Thanh Trà Festival takes place in Thủy Biều with many exciting activities: a best-fruit competition, an exhibition space for Huế specialties, a cooking contest featuring thanh trà dishes, along with community eco-tours and folk games. In particular, local people have created many unique dishes from thanh trà, such as thanh trà salad with dried squid, thanh trà salad with shrimp and pork, and thanh trà salad with dried anchovies, offering diners an unforgettable experience.
