Distinctive Features of the Traditional Attire of the People of Huế

The purple áo dài: a symbol of Huế culture.
Nowhere else in Vietnam has the purple áo dài become such a clear cultural symbol as in Huế. The people of Huế see dreamy purple as their signature colour, quiet yet deep, like the soul of the city's young women. The Huế áo dài has a modest, graceful cut that brings out a gentle, discreet beauty that is still alluring.
A Huế áo dài usually has a high collar, long sleeves and flowing panels, and is made of light silk or brocade, as delicate as the early-morning mist on the Perfume River. During festivals, students of Quốc Học High School and Huế University of Education often wear purple áo dài, creating a poetic scene full of the spirit of the ancient capital.
Turbans and traditional men's attire
Women were not the only ones with distinctive attire. Men in old Huế had their own as well. For ceremonies, weddings and festivals, Huế men usually wore a black or pale blue brocade áo dài with a khăn đóng (traditional turban), a symbol of dignity, composure and propriety. Traditional Huế menswear shows restraint and elegance, reflecting the refined, ceremony-minded way of life of the old royal court culture.
A revival in modern life
Even as society keeps modernising, Huế's traditional dress still has an important place. Many young people in Huế choose to wear the áo dài to school, to the pagoda or to cultural events as a way of preserving their identity and rekindling pride in their national culture. Designers in Huế also keep creating and reinventing the áo dài and traditional dress to suit the pace of modern life, while keeping their timeless, noble soul.
The traditional dress of Huế embodies a culture that is refined, profound and full of identity. It is more than outward appearance: it is soul and memory, the essence of Huế woven into every stitch. Amid modern life, preserving and honouring this beauty is how Huế stays gentle and enduring in the hearts of generations to come.
