Chè Ông Lạc – The Sweet Taste of Huế

More than 20 years as part of life in the old capital

Founded in 1982 by a skilful woman from Quảng Nam who moved to Huế with her husband to make a living, Chè Ông Lạc began as a small, modest stall tucked away in a winding alley near Ông Thượng Bridge.
Back then it had no signboard and was simply known as “Chè Ông Thượng” after the nearby landmark.

The shop has lasted and stayed famous for more than two decades thanks to its distinctive flavours and affordable prices. At just 5,000 – 11,000 VND per glass, it has drawn generations of schoolchildren, students and travellers to enjoy simple sweet soups made with love.

Three sweet soups that made Chè Ông Lạc famous

The “best seller” bean sweet soup

Unlike ordinary bean sweet soups, the one here is made with three specialty beans from Đà Nẵng: red kidney beans, red beans and soybeans. It is cooked thick, and the nutty beans blend with a rich, creamy milk.
Funnily enough, people still “debate” whether that milk is coconut milk or soy milk. It's the secret behind a flavour you'll remember after just one taste.
It costs only 8,000 VND per glass, and you'll be so hooked you'll “forget your way home”.

Fragrant sweet corn soup

Chewy corn kernels, a light and delicate syrup and a little grated coconut make this corn sweet soup simple yet full of Huế character.

Colourful fruit sweet soup

It sounds familiar, but the way it's made is unique. The fruit is cut into bite-sized pieces, with more than ten kinds, including mango, custard apple, avocado, longan and jackfruit, mixed with ice and creamy milk. The result is an icy, colourful glass that looks as good as it tastes.

The taste of memories

Chè Ông Lạc Huế is more than a sweet soup shop. It holds the memories of many generations. The simple setting, the lively laughter of customers, the feeling of sitting in a small house in a quiet alley… all of it takes you back to childhood.

Though it isn't on a main street, the shop is always busy with customers who happily seek it out to enjoy its sweets and relive old memories.

If you're ever in Huế, don't miss Chè Ông Lạc at 36 Thanh Tịnh, Vỹ Dạ Ward, Huế City, a place full of sweet, homely flavours and a piece of the old capital's memories. A glass of sweet soup here will cool you down and make Huế feel close and unforgettable.
