The Green Lawn on the North Bank of the Perfume River – A Green Space in the Heart of Huế

A new place to meet on hot days

In summer, when temperatures in Huế sometimes hit 38°C, locals and visitors look for cool, airy places to relax. One of them, the green lawn along the north bank of the Perfume River between Trường Tiền Bridge and Phú Xuân Bridge, has become a familiar evening spot. Thanks to its riverside park setting, it draws hundreds of people every day who come to enjoy the breeze and have fun. From late afternoon well into the night the lawn is busy with chatter and laughter, yet it keeps the peaceful character Huế is known for.

A green space in the heart of the city

The lawn stretches for almost 1km. Lush and clean, it gives the city centre a cool, fresh patch of green. Families spread out picnic mats, children play, and adults unwind after a day at work. Groups of young friends come here to take sunset photos, share snacks or hold cosy birthday parties. When night falls, the lights of Trường Tiền Bridge shimmer on the water and the cool river breeze makes the scene both romantic and relaxing.

From weeds to a community destination

Few would guess that only a few years ago this area was an overgrown patch of weeds that hardly anyone visited. The change began with the “Green Sunday” movement, when residents came together to clean up, pick up litter and look after the landscape. Recently, the Huế City Parks and Green Trees Company gave the whole area a makeover: mowing the grass, clearing the rubbish and building safe paths down to the lawn so everyone can enjoy it with peace of mind. Together, the community and local authorities have turned a neglected area into a green, clean and friendly destination for all ages.

Plans to extend and connect the landscape

According to Mr. Lê Như Chinh, Director of the Huế City Parks and Green Trees Company, the lawn will be extended from where it ends now all the way to Thiên Mụ Pagoda, forming a continuous green strip along the river. Other areas, such as the south bank of the Perfume River and Dã Viên Islet, will also be improved in the same way. This will give the community more green space and also help preserve and celebrate the beauty of both banks of the Perfume River, the symbol of Huế.
